Student organizations

1. Student government
Every student is a member of the student government called "SAMORZĄD" [SELF-GOVERNMENT]. The self-government acts through its Council which is elected every two years. The Council deals with practical matters such as accommodation and scholarships, and cooperates with other organizations in Poland and abroad.
The Council is a member of the European Medical Student Association (EMSA) within whose framework it is working to organise a joint holiday exchange program with different European countries.

American Student Government
All students of the English language Programs at PUMS can be members of their own Government, which has been designed to represent their needs to the administration of the School, to organize student activities and to provide academic information to its members.
The American Student Government maintains cooperative relations between the Polish student Government, faculty and administration of Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland.

Norwegian Student Government
Starting from academic year 2002/2003 Norwegian Student Government was established. It is located in:

Poznan Taiwanese Student Government
Starting from academic year 2006/2007 Taiwanese Student Government was established. All the Taiwanese students can become members of the government.

3. International Federation of Medical Students Associations – IFMSA

IFMSA-Poland is an independent student organization and is a part of the international federation - IFMSA, which stands for International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations. It is currently the largest body representing medicine students from all over the world. Its foundation in Poland took place in 1956 and there are students from 11 Polish medical universities among its members.

The ultimate goals of IFMSA-Poland comprise realization and spreading the ideas of social work in general, integration of medicine students’ community and giving opportunities to broaden medical as well as non-specialist knowledge and skills.

The IFMSA’s activity is based on its 6 Standing Committees:
  • SCOME - Standing Committee on Medical Education – comprises organization of meetings, conferences, workshops and courses

  • SCOPH - Standing Committee on Public Health – its primary aim is to increase medical consciousness of the society; screening and preventive actions are performed

  • SCORA - Standing Committee on Reproductive Health and AIDS – spreads the knowledge on ways of transmission and prevention of venereal diseases and AIDS

  • SCORP - Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace – cares about the welfare of refugees and world peace; among its actions are collecting funds for those in need and cooperating with UNICEF

  • SCOPE - Standing Committee on Professional Exchange – thanks to this program over 300 Polish students are able to go abroad for their summer work experience

  • SCORE - Standing Committee on Research Exchange – gives the chance to participate in a scientific project together with students from other countries


  • To its members, IFMSA offers unlimited development opportunities in both, medical and non-medical fields. It also constitutes an excellent way of gaining valuable experience.

    4. Student’s Scientific Association
    A member of the Student’s Scientific Association of Poznan University of Medical Sciences can be any student who takes part in medical research. The SSA organizes international scientific conferences, voluntary programs and international summer practices for medical students.

    5. Academic Sports Association
    The University boasts the best judo, swimming and running teams of all the Polish universities. There is ample opportunity for practicing these and other sports, such as skiing, rowing and canoeing. Sporting activities for students of the University are organized by the Academic Sports Association. It has over 400 members – students of all faculties as well as academic teachers. You are welcome to participate in sporting activities in the following sections: track & field for men and women, swimming, soccer for men, judo for men, basketball and volleyball for men and women, table tennis for men and women, free style dancing and lawn tennis. The sport sections of the Association take part in popular international and local sports competitions.
    There are also university sports events such as: the university basketball league “NBA”, academic indoor soccer league, table tennis and tennis tournaments for students, university workers and their families.
    There are various summer and winter camps for those interested in skiing or canoeing.
    By participating in the sporting activities of the sections you can get into the University sports teams. These teams can boast of outstanding achievements. They have won the University Championships in swimming, athletics, women’s basketball and men’s judo and volleyball. We have also won the Swimming Cup, awarded by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, for the fourth time.

    6. University Choir
    The Choir was established in 1959. It is a mixed choir whose repertory comprises the most important styles of Polish and foreign music, both contemporary and ancient, which points to its universal character.

    7. Alumni association
    The Alumni Association is designed for University graduates of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculties of the Poznan University, Medical Faculty of the Underground University of Western Poland, Polish Medical Faculty at the Edinburgh University and graduates of Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poznań.
    The Association is interested to establish co-operation with similar organizations abroad.

    8. Eskulap Students Cultural Center
    There are many ways in which students can spend their leisure time at the Students Cultural Center ESKULAP. The Center is the biggest club in Poznan and attracts young people to its varied cultural functions.
    The Club is a two-storey building with the first storey occupied by the hall and the cloak-room and one large concert room for about 1000 people. The second storey has a large disco room and a bar with
    a lounge.
    Most popular are its jazz evenings hosting famous Polish and foreign jazz musicians such as Michał Urbaniak, Wojciech Karolak, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Lora Szafran and Charlie Mariano. The Center is also known for its jazz festival – POZNAŃ JAZZ FAIR.
    Another kind of music which has its own special concerts is blues. The most famous blues musician who gave a concert for over 4 thousand people was The King of Blues – B.B. King.
    Moreover, the Center organizes rock concerts of the most popular stars of the music season.
